A Study on the Development of Safety Education Program for Parents in Kindergartens

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate current conditions of safety education for parent and parents¡¯ safety consciousness and their need for safety education program in kindergarten. Following research questions were established for the purpose: 1. How different is parents¡¯ consciousness of safety education for the child in kindergarten according to their attributes? 2. How different is parents¡¯ consciousness of their children¡¯s safety life according to their attributes? 3. What difference are there in parents¡¯ experience of safety accident and ability to manage emergency according to their attributes? 4. What difference are therein parents¡¯ safety education for children at home according to their attributes? 5. Are there any difference in parents¡¯ need for safety education program according to their attributes? This study was based on the survey of 260 kindergarten parents in Suwon city and Gyeonggi-do area. The data were compared and analyzed with the characteristics (age, educational background, job) of parents. Classified according to age, 18 parents were between 20-30, 224 parents were 30-40 and 18 parents were above 40. According to level of education, 139 parents graduated at high school, 58 parents went to 2 year college and 63 parents were 4 year university graduates. According to the status of job, 234 parents were not working while 26 parents had jobs. The subjects of this study responded to the questionnaire developed by the researcher. Collected data were analyzed through spss/win 10.0, especially for the analyzing of age, educational level and existence of employment, x©÷ verification were used. Followings are the results. 1. Most of parents recognized the importance of safety education in kindergartens but their levels of satisfaction in current status of safety education were low. They also answered parents¡¯ role is important to prevent danger. 2. 60.0£¥ of respondents had experience of their children¡¯s injuries and most of them had no ability of emergency first aide. 3. Most respondents should not be showed to practice safety education for their children at home, and also they had difficulty in using the knowledge related to concrete guidelines and teaching materials for safety education. 4. Only 27.3£¥ of parents participated safety education program and over the half of them had need in multiple side views on safety education programs which include the various ways of preventing injuries and strategies coping with them.
